Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, a representative will greet you and transfer you to your hotel in Moshi. After check-in, you can relax, explore the town, or enjoy dinner at the lodge. In the evening, meet your guides for a pre-climb briefing, where you’ll go over safety, the route, gear, and altitude tips. Prepare for your adventure with a good night’s rest before the trek begins.
After breakfast, drive to the Rongai starting point near the Kenyan border. The trek begins through cultivated farmlands and pine forest, with a gradual ascent on a wide trail. Keep an eye out for colobus monkeys and various bird species. After 3–4 hours of hiking, you’ll reach Simba Camp near the edge of the moorland zone. Settle into camp, enjoy dinner, and rest as you begin acclimatizing to the altitude
Today’s hike is a steady climb through heather and moorland terrain. You’ll enjoy clear views of Kibo Peak ahead and the vast plains of Kenya behind. The trail is relatively gentle, allowing your body time to adjust to the altitude. After 5–6 hours of trekking, arrive at Second Cave Camp, nestled in a sheltered area beneath the slopes of Kibo. Enjoy hot meals and stories from the guides before settling in for the night.
Departing Second Cave, the trail begins to steepen slightly as you traverse through alpine vegetation and open moorland. Today offers stunning views of the jagged Mawenzi Peak as you gain altitude gradually. After about 3–4 hours of hiking, you’ll reach Kikelewa Camp, a small but scenic site tucked near a sheltered valley. Rest and hydrate in preparation for more significant altitude gains in the coming days.
Today’s trek is short but steep, climbing through the alpine zone with increasingly rugged terrain. The scenery becomes more dramatic as you approach Mawenzi Tarn, nestled beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi Peak. This is one of the most beautiful camps on the mountain. You’ll arrive after 3–4 hours of trekking, giving you ample time to acclimatize and enjoy the views. The afternoon includes an acclimatization walk and a hearty dinner.
After a restful night, the trail continues westward across the barren saddle that connects Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. The hike is long, dry, and windswept, but not steep. The landscape here is stark and moon-like. After about 5–6 hours, you’ll reach Kibo Hut, your base camp for the summit attempt. After an early dinner and final summit briefing, rest and prepare for a midnight departure to Uhuru Peak—the highlight of your trek.
The summit attempt begins around midnight. You’ll ascend slowly via the zigzagging switchbacks up to Gilman’s Point (5,685m), then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. Watch the sunrise from Africa’s highest point! After photos and celebration, descend carefully back to Kibo Hut for a brief rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut. The full day takes 12–14 hours. Enjoy a hot dinner and well-earned rest at Horombo Camp.
Your final descent continues through the moorland and lush rainforest, passing Mandara Hut along the way. After 5–6 hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at Marangu Gate. Collect your summit certificate, meet your driver, and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi. Celebrate your incredible achievement with your team, and enjoy a well-deserved shower, a hearty meal, and some relaxation!
