Mkomazi covers over 3,200 square kilometers and borders Kenya’s Tsavo West National Park, forming a vast transboundary ecosystem. Unlike the busier parks on the Northern Circuit, Mkomazi offers solitude, pristine landscapes, and exclusive wildlife encounters. It is a vital stronghold for black rhinos, thanks to the Mkomazi Rhino Sanctuary, and one of the best places to spot African wild dogs in Tanzania.
The park is also rich in antelope species, including oryx, lesser kudu, eland, hartebeest, and dik-dik, as well as giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and elephants. Mkomazi is also a paradise for birders, with over 450 bird species, including the rare straw-tailed whydah, vulturine guinea fowl, and martial eagle.
