Visa and Entry Requirements for Tanzania Safari Travelers

Visa and Entry Requirements for Tanzania Safari Travelers

Planning a Tanzania safari starts with understanding the country’s visa and entry requirements. These rules apply to most international travelers and ensure a smooth arrival at airports or border crossings. Knowing the correct documents, visa options, and health requirements will help you avoid delays and enjoy a stress-free start to your safari.

Visa and Entry Requirements for Tanzania Safaris.

Who Needs a Visa to Enter Tanzania?

Most foreign travelers require a visa to enter Tanzania. Nationals from neighboring East African countries may enter without a visa, and a few other countries are exempt. Everyone else must apply for either an e-Visa, visa on arrival, or a transit visa depending on their travel plans.

Tanzania Visa Options

1. Tanzania e-Visa (Recommended)

The e-Visa is the easiest and most reliable option. Travelers can apply online before arrival and receive approval via email. This helps reduce waiting time at immigration counters and ensures you meet all requirements before flying.

2. Visa on Arrival

If you did not apply online, you can still obtain a visa at major airports such as Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro (JRO), and Zanzibar. Although convenient, queues can be long during peak travel seasons.

3. Transit Visa

For travelers passing through Tanzania for less than seven days, a transit visa is available. This applies mainly to travelers connecting to neighboring countries.

Passport Requirements

  • Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry.
  • It must have at least one or two blank pages for entry stamps.
  • Ensure your passport is not damaged or torn, as this may lead to denial of entry.

Yellow Fever & Health Requirements

A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is required only if:

  • You are traveling from a Yellow Fever–risk country, or
  • You transited for more than 12 hours in such a country.

Other recommended vaccinations include:

  • Hepatitis A & B
  • Typhoid
  • Tetanus
  • Routine vaccinations (MMR, polio, etc.)

Malaria exists in many safari areas. Travelers should consider preventive medication and take standard precautions such as using mosquito repellent and wearing long sleeves in the evening.

COVID-19 Entry Guidelines (If Applicable)

Entry rules change from time to time, but Tanzania no longer requires mandatory PCR tests for most travelers. However, it is always advisable to check the latest updates before your trip.

Entry Requirements for Zanzibar

Zanzibar follows the same immigration and visa rules as mainland Tanzania. If your international flight lands in Zanzibar, your visa will still cover the entire country, including the mainland.

Tips for a Smooth Arrival

  • Apply for your e-Visa at least 3–4 weeks before travel.
  • Keep printed copies of your visa approval and accommodation details.
  • Have your return flight confirmation ready for inspection.
  • Carry cash or a card for visa-on-arrival payment if needed.
